How Much is the P90X Diet Going to Cost?

During the research phases of the P90X program a lot of people get sticker shock when they start adding up the start-up costs. There is the equipment, the supplements and don’t forget about paying for the DVDs. Additionally, there is the cost of changing your diet and the new foods you will have to be buy in order to start eating healthier and follow the P90X diet.

Please understand, in order to see the ‘P90X Results’ they advertise on the commercials, YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE DIET! Just so everyone understands, YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE DIET! No workout in the world is going work off junk food, sodas, doughnuts, etc. If you want to succeed at P90X, then the Nutrition Plan is a must. A lot of people insist that the diet is more important than the workouts.

Since the diet is vital to success in P90X, people often ask “how much is the P90X Diet going to cost?” It is a good question, because you will see an increase in your grocery bill up front. Especially as you are experimenting with what foods you like and don’t like. If you do not buy fruit regularly, you may be surprised at how much a few bananas, apples and oranges cost.

Secret Coupon for P90X Diet

I am going to share with you a very secret coupon I found for the P90X Diet. It is going to require a little bit of homework on your part, but the savings are amazing. Here is what you need to do to take advantage of this secret coupon:

Write down how much you spend on going out for breakfast, lunch and dinner in one month. This includes Starbucks, fast food, and sit down dinners.

Write down how much you spend on alcoholic drinks, bad foods like cookies, ice cream, chips, pretzels, dips, basically everything I used to eat and drink in one month. Don’t forget about sodas and candy

Now add that all up. You will be shocked at how much you spend in one month on all the foods and drinks that are not good for you.

Odds are you are not going to spend that much buying healthier foods. You may also find that you are eating in more because it is hard to follow a diet when you eat out a lot. Most restaurants are not interested in cooking healthy meals. I struggle finding a 100% healthy dish. Sure the fish may be grilled, however the veggies are covered in butter…..

Here is what I used to spend a month before the P90X diet:

Mc Donald’s breakfast – $2.75 x 18 days a month

Starbucks – $4.95 x 6 days a month

Fast food – $7.00 x 12 days a month

Soda – $25.00

Junk food – $75.00

Alcohol – $50.00

Eating out – $20.00 x 8 days a month

GRAND TOTAL – $473.20

There is a good chance you are not going to spend this much on a new diet. I know I don’t. If you have run the numbers, and it turns out you are spending more on the new diet I have one more thought.

Imagine if you were going to buy a brand new Lamborghini and the dealer told you that the vehicle only took Premium Unleaded. You wouldn’t give it a second thought because you know a high end vehicle like this deserves the best. Apply that same mindset to your body. You have been giving your body the cheapest fuel on the market for too long. Time to upgrade to some high test. Even if it does end up costing you a few more dollars a month, it is worth it for the results you will get.

My Diet History

I have never been one to read nutritional information on anything. When my wife and I first started dating (10 years ago!), I thought it was funny how she would always read the info on the sides or backs of products. At the time, I figured I would always be fit, active and able to eat and drink anything. Well fast forward to now and clearly that did not hold up. To achieve the best results with P90X, I am working hard not only during the exercise, but also at my diet.

P90x Foods

Since starting P90X I have become a hard core nutrition label reader! So much so that my wife is starting to get annoyed! The first round of the P90X diet is called “Fat Shredder”. The goal is to work hard, cut back on the bad stuff, and loose those extra pounds. Your target breakdown is 20% fat, 30% carbs, and 50% protein. So, here are some of the foods I am eating to hit those numbers:

Cheerios

Skim Milk

Bananas

Strawberries

Blueberries

Nature’s Own Whole Grain bread

Whey Protein

100% fruit juice

Hard boiled eggs (egg whites only)

Peppers

Mushrooms

Carrots

Omelets

ISS Protein bars

Pure Protein bars

Beef Jerky

Salad

Low fat dressing

Albacore Tuna

Cottage Cheese (I really have to force myself to eat this)

Low fat String cheese

Cheese slices

Chocolate skim milk

Sprite Zero

Low sodium and low fat deli meats

Hormel Bacon bits

Low Fat shredded cheese

Chicken Breasts

Salmon

Tuna

Hummas

Soy Crisps

Target brand fruit snacks

Lots of Water!

Based on all my research, these foods are healthy, good for me, and will allow to meet my diet goals for P90X. Let me know what you think and please add suggestions.

I am always looking for quick, easy and healthy meals. This crock pot recipe fits all of my criteria. Chicken breast are a great source of protein. I have not had a chance to taste the meal yet because I just started the cooking this morning. However, a quick check at lunch today has me excited for dinner tonight.

Ingredients

5 – 8 chicken breasts

Dry rub (optional)

carrots

1/2 onion

celery

mushrooms

fat free, low sodium chicken stock

Directions

Take your chicken and roll it in dry rub or just add it to the crock pot. Cut up your other ingredients and add about 2 cups of chicken stock. You want to make sure you have enough to cover the chicken entirely. Let cook for 10 hours and serve.

Gotta Love Wall Squats

Legs and Back is a great P90X workout. It is a straight forward workout and has a number of opportunities to add weights for an additional workout. The 80,20s are a killer, but I feel like I pushed it hard while working on getting good form. I am seeing improvements in my pull-ups. I am up to 2 or 3 un-assisted and then bring the chair in. This is nothing to write home to mom about, but it is progress. The wall squats are also good workouts, especially when you start mixing in leg raises! I took a few breaks during these routines, but nothing like my first time through.

Ab Ripper X

The more I do ARX, the more I like it. There are 339 reps and I am working on getting all 339 with good form and proper technique. Each time through I push it a little harder and see myself getting deeper and deeper into the routine without a break or sloppy form. This is a solid core workout, not just abs. The leg raises for example are a burner throughout the body.

P90X Diet

I have been very diligent about updating my diet on my FitDay.com account. However, I am still struggling with getting that 20/30/50 of fat/carb/protein mixture. Coach Josh has been a big help with suggestions and I am considering reaching out to a nutritionist for a second opinion. The diet can be a bit frustrating trying to figure out what to eat, but I know it is a key part of the P90X program.

Overall I am happy with this week’s progress. I am feeling good and keep telling myself I will start to see physical differences soon. Like Tony says “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your body”. Tomorrow is Kenpo X and I am ready for some kicking and puching!

My P90x diet is broken down as 20% fat intake, 40% carbohydrate intake, and 40% protein. As such, I am always looking for quick, easy food that is low in fat, high in protein and cheap. Hard boiled eggs are the perfect item!

I am not a cook, so I had no idea of the proper way to cook an egg. My assumption was just drop it in boiling water (don’t do this, because the egg will crack!). However, there is an art to boiling an egg:

Put your eggs in a pan and fill with water. You want just enough water to cover the eggs. Place the pan on the burner.

Turn the burner to high and wait for the water to boil. Once boiling, set a timer for 3 minutes. I always let it go a little longer.

After 3 or 4 minutes of cooking remove from heat and let sit for 8 – 10 minutes.

After 8 -10 minutes, run under water for about a minute and then let soak in the pan for 30 minutes. After that place in the refriderator and you are ready to go!

I eat about 2 hard boiled eggs a day. Of course I remove the yolk and only eat the egg white. They make a great snack or go well on a salad. If you have not thought about adding these to your P90X diet, I strongly suggest it.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way to maintain and monitor your diet, you need to check out FitDay.com. This site allows you to enter the food you eat each day and calculates the total nutritional intake for that day. The default inventory has a lot of the foods I already eat. One cool feature is you can manually add items if you cannot find it in the default inventory. I could not find the exact match for my Whey drink, so I created it and added in. Once it has been added to your inventory, you can re-use it for the next day’s entry.

Another convenient feature is the easy to read pie chart that breaks down the foods in your diet between Fat, carbs, and protein. For round 1 of the P90X diet, my goal is a breakdown of 20/30/50. As you can see, I have a little tweaking to do.

If you are serious about sticking with your fitness diet, check out FitDay.com. It is easy to use, intuitive and its free!

A healthy diet is one of the keys to your P90X success and one of the reasons of my previous failures.

The P90X nutrition guide is a great place to start when trying to find a healthy diet for you. I basically took their recommendations for the amount of protein needed, fruits, etc and modified it for my tastes. The biggest thing I have learned is you need enough protein in your diet to support muscle and muscle tissue healing after workouts. Also having both simple and complex carbs are crucial for muscle building.
